Choose Glass and Metal
What’s GLAME?
Sustainability – and how to give it a bigger platform with both customers and the public at large – has long been a big topic at Silgan Closures. The answer? GLAME.
GLAME is a compound of the words glass and metal and embodies the conscious decision for sustainable consumerism.
Glas in combination with metal has many benefits, for the producers as well as the consumer. GLAME stands for a greener and more sustainable future, starting today.

„Sustainability“ has become an often-used buzzword over the last few years. For some, it has even become a lifestyle. However, with only some small adjustments to our daily routine, we can turn sustainability from a buzzword to a reality. Our aim is to motivate others with our campaign - and to show how small adjustments can create real change.

- Robert Swan, Arctic explorer and conservationist -
Thanks to the efforts of trade and commerce, sustainability rarely means you have to sacrifice comfort these days. Grocery stores are filled to the brim with sustainable products and alternatives to plastic. Thus, making the sustainable choice becomes easier and easier each day.

Fridge Magnet DIY
Fridge Magnet DIY 1. Find a metal lid You can find a metal lid almost everywhere! Whether in the supermarket or at home. Big or small. There are no limits to your creativity. 2. Wash and dry well It is important that the lid is completely dry. Otherwise it will take much longer for the acrylic paint to dry in the next step. 3. Prime with white acrylic paint Try to apply the acrylic paint evenly on the lid. If the white paint is blotchy or transparent: Let it dry and apply another coat. Continue until the lid is completely and opaquely white. The primer creates a neutral surface for painting and is therefore very important. 4. Let your creativity run free! Paint any motif you feel like. If you are looking for inspiration: Pinterest is your friend and helper! 😉 Note that acrylic paints are difficult or impossible to remove from clothing and surfaces. When you’re done, let your masterpiece dry for a few hours. 5. Attach the magnet with glue 6. Admire 🙂

Questions about glass and metal
Questions about glass and metal 1. Why do glass bottles have different colours? Glass bottles have different colours because they have to provide different light protection depending on the contents. White glass does not shield the contents from light, green glass offers a bit more light protection and is used for example for wine. Brown glass provides the best protection from light and is used for example for beer. 2. Do I have to rinse my glass containers before throwing them away? Glass containers do not need to be rinsed before disposal. However, they should be spoon clean. But beware: there is one exception. Honey jars should be rinsed. 3. Do I need to remove labels or stickers from jars before disposal? No, labels or stickers on jars do not need to be removed before disposal. 4. What do I have to consider when disposing of glass? Glass should be thrown into the glass container as gently and carefully as possible. The more undamaged the glass is, the easier it is to recycle at the facility.

The psychology of codes
The psychology of codes The autopilot There is an autopilot in our brain. This scientific finding explains how our brain reacts for example to products. Let’s say we go to a supermarket and do our weekend shopping. As we browse the shelves and look at the products, the autopilot breaks down the products and their characteristics into individual codes. These can be, for example, the shape, the colour and the material. The autopilot compares these signals with mental prototypes. This enables the person to classify the product. The prototypes Prototypes are created through experience and implicit (i.e. unconscious) learning. In the course of our lives, we learn when which product is used and by whom.We learn this, for example, from the internet, television or the newspaper and from friends or family. The statistics of the environment If certain codes often appear in context, these codes are linked together in our brain. Our brain follows the motto: Neurons that fire together, wire together. An example: We see a new laptop with a metallic design, we see shiny metallic and streamlined sports cars and we see futuristic robots gliding across the screen in a movie. So the signal metal always comes into contact with modernity and performance. That is why metal becomes a symbol for it: Metal = modernity and performance. People see certain codes in connection with other codes. If this happens statistically often, these codes are linked with each other. This phenomenon is called statistics of the environment. Codes for GLAME We can use this knowledge about codes and thereby even do something for more sustainability. How can this be done? Well, that’s easy. For example, if you bring a glass bottle with a metal cap to your weekly sports session, others will be inspired. Through repetition, sharing and positive feedback, they will also associate sustainability with glass and metal. And the next time they go shopping, they will definitely think about it when they are faced with the choice of which bottle to buy.

The future is eco-friendly
The future is eco-friendly The supermarket of tomorrow Strolling through the supermarket and taking a conscious look around, you have probably noticed that sustainable products have been on the rise for some time now – the desire for an environmentally conscious lifestyle is growing. However, many people do not pay attention to the packaging, but only to the products. The conscious purchase decision for products in packaging materials such as glass and metal is also important and must not be forgotten in all the hype about sustainability. After all, you decide which materials will be found on supermarket shelves in the future. The world as a test market There is a test market in Haßloch, Germany. And this is how it works: Here, products are available that you can’t get elsewhere. Hassloch residents see advertising that is not broadcast or printed anywhere else. Market researchers want to test how the products are received. If the Haßlochers find something really good and buy a lot of it, it can be found elsewhere shortly afterwards. But actually – and we can be honest about this – not only Haßloch, but the whole world is a test market. New products come onto the market every day and some simply disappear again when there is no demand. As more and more people choose to consume in an environmentally conscious way, these sustainable products will consequently become established. By increasing the demand for them, you determine what the supermarket of tomorrow will look like. Go GLAME Did you know? Only about 39% of German plastic waste is recycled, the rest is shipped abroad or burned. By contrast, 87% of glass is recycled and 91% of metal. Every micro-decision you make every day contributes to global change. As a #GLAMER, you have the opportunity to influence the future of consumer goods by choosing glass and metal. So now it’s time to get started and stick together. Become a #GLAMER.

Corona-Bucket-List
Corona bucket list A project that gives hope! After a month of the pandemic, it was still crystal clear what activities were missing. But after a year, you catch yourself finding it harder and harder to imagine a world without a pandemic. So let’s take a moment. Sit back, close our eyes and ask yourself concretely: What would I be doing right now without Corona? And to make sure you don’t forget any of it, a pen, a piece of paper and a glass bottle with a metal cap can help. Time to dream Grab a pen and a piece of paper. Now you can get started: think about what you want to do when the pandemic is over.Would you like to scream your voice hoarse at a concert? Spend an evening at the theatre? Give everyone in your life a big hug and never let go? Meet up with your friends in a restaurant to order the whole menu? Throw a party and dance until your feet hurt. Or would you like to spontaneously go to the airport and travel to a foreign country? Think of 10 things you would like to do. There are no limits to your creativity. And when the time comes, you can take your list out of your glass bottle again and remember all the ideas and dreams you had. Well, and now? Now it’s up to you to turn your dreams into reality. Have fun!

Choose Glass & Metal
Choose Glass & Metal Glame: What does that mean? Small word, big meaning: the combination of glass and metal. With the launch of the Glame campaign, Silgan is setting an example for sustainability and the conscious consumption of packaging materials. You have a choice every day – and glass and metal can do much more than you think. Dance of the resources The decision for the glass container with a metal closure holds immense potential. Because the small metal lid can do much more than just seal your fruit juice airtight. After each use, it can be recycled and shaped anew, starting yet another lifecycle. Today it is a metal cap, but tomorrow the reshaped metal could already be exploring the high skies as an aircraft component. It’s almost like magic. Your metal cap is never spent, it only changes its appearance. The material retains its positive properties and underlying structure even after multiple recycling cycles. This means that metal can be used again and again for new applications. Thanks to all these positive properties, metal has rightly secured itself the top of the recycling mountain and can proudly claim the highest recycling rates of all packaging materials. Do you feel it too? Does your drink from the Glame bottle have an especially environmentally-friendly aftertaste? Congratulations, excellent intuition! With your choice, you have just contributed to saving raw materials, reducing waste – and thus producing fewer greenhouse gases. Mmmmh, that makes it taste even better! Click! We keep it tight. The combination of glass and metal screw cap prevents air from entering the container and guarantees perfect food safety. When you open it up for the first time, you hear the familiar “click”, giving you the security of an intact vacuum. Happy ears all around! There’s not a single safety concern in sight. Becoming an everyday hero is easier than you think – by choosing glass with a metal closure, the first step has been taken. For a greener future and a more sustainable here and now.
