Drinktec 2017 – Silgan Closures

11.09.2017 | Hall A4, Stand 531

In the development of any new closure, Silgan’s Total System Approach provides customers with a complete service comprising initial material selection, design, choice of decoration, advice and supply of suitable filling and capping equipment and support in the meeting of relevant food and drink standards and regulations.

Having selected the appropriate metal, plastic or composite closure, Silgan can work with customers in the creation of designs and artwork, advising for example on the use of colours in order to create the most effective appearance. The company’s integrated litho printing service then takes designs from concept to production, with final artwork accurately adapted to the specific closure type and diameter.

In addition to high quality multi-colour printing, the availability of speciality inks and coatings for a gloss or matt finish, and shaping features such as embossing can help to further enhance branding and product differentiation on-shelf.

The closure design process can also involve research and development into new compound materials. Prototyping and pilot line capabilities enable concepts to be discussed and revised prior to final decisions being taken.

Silgan is able to supply a range of filling equipment such as cap feeders, sealing machines and dud detectors. Open frame designs in top quality stainless steel allow optimum cleaning and minimum maintenance, while a larger base area and extended machine bed provide greater stability.

As part of Silgan’s Food Technology Service the company analyses customer processes in order to produce recommendations for best practice. This enables companies to enhance product quality, reduce failure rates and through this achieve cost savings. The Vapour-Vacuum® System created by Silgan delivers product quality of the highest level for improved taste, preservation of product colour and consistency, and an extended shelf life. Silgan’s CTS (Customer Technical Service) supports all the engineering processes of this all-round sealing technology.

Once a closure is agreed for production, centralised planning across all Silgan plants ensures that schedules and delivery dates can be adhered to. This also enables seasonal peaks to be taken into consideration and unscheduled orders to be accommodated as quickly as possible.

As well as third party certification for new products, Silgan performs comprehensive in-house tests prior to the commercialisation of new specifications. Product assessments comply with all relevant international manufacturing standards and European food contact legislation. In addition, Silgan updates customers on regulatory changes that might affect their overall packaging.

This comprehensive range of services enables Silgan to offer a complete ‘one stop’ service in the design and production of a closure.
